Diamond Care Guide and Security Tips – compliments of Jewelers Mutual Insurance Comapany.
- When not wearing your jewelry, place each item in a separate, soft, compact container. If cluttered together, jewelry can become scratched – even diamond.
- Avoid heavy blows to your diamond. Even though it’s among the hardest materials, diamonds can chip if struck at the right angle.
- Dirt buildup may hasten the wear of your jewelry. Visit your jeweler at least once a year to have your fine jewelry professionally cleaned and inspected for worn or cracked prongs, faulty clasps, or other potential problems.
- Between visits to your jewelers, clean diamond jewelry with professional jewelry cleaner or rubbing alcohol. Gently use a soft brush to loosen dirt around the prongs.
- Store jewelry in a safe place. Remember, a thief will go to a jewelry box first.
- Always take time to place removed jewelry in a secure place, not in a pocket, on a counter or in a public area.
- When traveling, hand-carry – don’t pack – your jewelry. And don’t leave it in your attended hotel room. Use the in-room hotel safe whenever possible.
- Have your jewelry cleaned and inspected at least annually; sooner if you’ve bumped or caught a prong on something or notice something amiss.
